Evan Blass: Snapdragon 835 Info

Note to Shazam Users: If you enable the Auto Shazam tile in your quick tiles (available in 7.0+) it breaks Google Now and Google Assistant, even if you toggle it back off. A reboot will fix it.

Posted: 02 Jan 2017 07:20 AM PST

Edit: You can fix it without a reboot. Just force stop the Shazam app. Thanks, /u/Daveed84!

Just replicated it a few times, and Google Assistant would not connect, regardless of whether or not the tile was activated. Might have something to do with Shazam taking use of the microphone.

If all smartphone manufacturers were reading this thread, what would you want to say to them?

Posted: 02 Jan 2017 07:13 AM PST

Title sums it up really. Imagine every phone manufacturer on the market right now had their R&D teams, their sales departments... Marketing... Designers... Engineers etc all reading this one thread... What would you as a consumer like the voice?

could someone could try it and tell us if this works?

PSA: More information on OpenGL/Vulkan requirements Nougat (3.1 not needed)

Posted: 02 Jan 2017 11:40 AM PST

I decided to revisit the hot topic of Nougat compatibility on devices based on a couple of recent thread comments.

There are two different things between require and recommended. OpenGL 2.0 is an absolute must while OpenGL 3.0 is a "should" implement (probably for compatibility with apps)

https://source.android.com/compatibility/android-cdd.html#7_1_display_and_graphics

As for Vulkan, we already know that the Nexus 9 doesn't support it. Devices don't have to support the Vulkan API, but they must support the ability to report they don't support the API. In other words, Level0 support.

https://source.android.com/compatibility/android-cdd.html#3_3_native_api_compatibility

Now what does this mean about device support? Well, let's take a look at Android One devices. 2nd generation devices either have a Snapdragon 410 or 617. The Cherry Mobile One G1 runs on a 410 with an Adreno 306. Yes, older than the Adreno 330 in SD801/810s. Yes, only supports OpenGL 3.0.

And finally, my point, it runs Nougat:

http://www.gizguide.com/2016/09/cherry-mobile-one-g1-nougat.html

So what does this mean? I'm not sure. Maybe Google relaxed their requirements. Maybe Sony was told something else. Maybe Google paid for drivers (I doubt it). Regardless, I figured this is all worth sharing.

[DEV] Taking Control of your Music Playback Experience

Posted: 02 Jan 2017 04:47 AM PST

Taking Control of Your Music Playback Experience

When I first started working on Auracle, I wanted a music player that could play music the way I wanted it to be played. I wanted to be able to choose whatever song came up next, or even make an album or playlist play next. I would often forget the name of a song, but I knew the words, so I wanted to be able to search by the lyrics. I also wanted it to be beautifully designed, but alas… I was only a programmer. My visual design skills included a basic understanding of Microsoft Paint, and that was about it. I could make something work, but making it a joy to look at and use was a different matter. I was determined, so I decided to start with what I knew best: the code that went into making an app.

Fast forward a couple of months and now I have a very basic prototype which could play music, shuffle, skip songs, and add songs to a queue. It's a cool spring day in April of 2014 and I'm browsing /r/Android, when a post by /u/jessecoleman caught my eye. It was a submission to Taylor Ling's (a Google Developer Expert and Material Design Award Winner) Android Design contest. In his submission, Cole had designed a beautiful music player by the name of Eve. It featured work that clearly showed how much he cared about controlling the music playback experience with a queue. The contest wasn't over yet, but I had to reach out to him.

I sent Cole the app I had so far, and after getting it working on his phone, he agreed to work with me on making his mockups, now our dream, a reality. A few weeks later Cole was announced a winner of the design contest and now, we finally have a working beta to share with you!

Introducing Auracle: A queue based music player

Here is an imgur album showcasing the many features of Auracle.

Auracle's Features:

I have a Galaxy J7 running Marshmallow. I absolutely love it. It looks beautiful. People have in the past said that the notification panel is ugly, but the new white+blue+grey combo looks pretty great to me.
