Hi guys, I'm a jailbroken iPhone 6S+ user. I'm currently a slave to Apple's ecosystem (iPad, Apple TV, Watch but not a Mac) I apologize for the wall of text below, but I know you guys are always glad to give a helping hand.

I've been using iOS since the iPod Touch 2G, taking a break for a couple months only in the Galaxy S3 days, which was my first and only android experience. Many iOS users are in the same boat as me.

Android was a whole different thing back then. Nowadays, when I see the curved, bright and saturated screen of an S7 and how well it pairs with the material design, I feel like I'd love to give that a spin. My problem is that I've been fed constant complaints on behalf of android users, using different handsets and at different times. Here are my main concerns:

  • I've always heard that, after a "honeymoon" period, almost without fail, all android handsets start to experience stuttering, freezing, rebooting, framerate drops, etc. (maybe one of those at a time, sometimes all of those are common occurrences) does this happen? This is the most important one for me, because if there's something that none of my iPhones ever suffered from, was reduced performance.

  • Software glitches which are mostly hardware-specific. I've visited the 6P subreddit, only to find a plethora of people complaining about the camera app freezing or crashing, some focus issue I believe as well, or maybe just reduced performance in other parts of the OS (which is the purest form of android). I've also heard that Samsung's bloatware, although only a fraction of what it was back on the S3 days, still causes the phone to feel sluggish at times. Haven't heard about Huawei or HTC bloatware, but I have watched reviews which mentioned some lag here and there.

  • Software updates. The whole ordeal of having to choose a phone thinking about whether it will get updates in the future or not is pretty sad. I know that Nexus phones are guaranteed to get updates for two years I believe, but as I stated before, visiting the 6P subreddit, I've seen people complain about Google updating the OS but leaving bugs unresolved for several iterations of it. How do you handle this when choosing a phone?

  • Customization. If there's one area that I've been always convinced Android was leaps and bounds ahead of iOS was this. However, as a jailbroken iOS user, I find that I get most of what you guys can get out the box, but in a prettier package. As in, jb tweaks are very tightly integrated and always match the OS look and feel. In Android, you work with apps or, after rooting, with "modules" I think they're called. How do these differ from JB tweaks (stability-wise as well)? How different is the process of waiting for root vs waiting for a JB? Is rooting as necessary as jailbreaking?

Lastly:

  • Apps. I am aware of the differences in general app quality when comparing the App Store and the Play Store. Big names such as FB, Twitter, Instagram, etc are mostly the same. But when you start digging a little bit deeper, you find that there's a big difference in not only availability, but also variety and polish. At least, that's how my experience was and what I tend to hear from Android users. How's the Play Store these days? Has this changed a bit?

I apologize once again for the wall of text. If you could answer each point with one or two lines I'd be immensely grateful. Honestly, since these points are big question marks in my head right now, I wouldn't even know what handset to look into, because I don't want to be unpleasantly surprised later on. Android screens though... Damn. Most of them are sexy.

Anyway, thank you very much for your time. Any help is deeply appreciated.

My One M8's battery is starting to drain while charging if I'm using it. Sign of a dying battery?

Posted: 01 Sep 2016 09:25 AM PDT

See title. Battery level drops while it's plugged in if I'm using it (especially when playing games). My phone is almost two years old.

Should I replace the battery (and if so, how much would it cost)? Or just take the plunge and get a new phone? I was trying to wait out Nougat and get a new phone with Android 7 out of the box though.

So how the hell did my phone go from 0 to 100% in a few minutes?

Posted: 01 Sep 2016 12:55 PM PDT

So my phone turned off, as it does, when it has low battery, and when I plugged it in and turned it on, it was magically at 100% again. How did that happen?

Just to make sure, I turned it off again, and turned it back on, and it was still at 100%.

Should I buy Verizon Unpaid bill smartphone?

Posted: 01 Sep 2016 10:35 AM PDT

So I am thinking about buying a galaxy smartphone. The phone I am looking at the guy says he does not plan to pay his Verizon bill for his galaxy, but that it will not cause any issues for someone on at and t or tmobile.

I am currently with tmobile. Will there be any problems? Will the phone be blacklisted or unlocked if used with tmobile? He also mentions that the galaxy s7 might have lte band issues when switching to different network. Want to hear your thoughts

Are there any keyboards that include iOS emojis and allow swift typing?

Posted: 01 Sep 2016 08:56 AM PDT

I don't know if swift typing is the actually term, but I'm using SwiftKey currently and Really miss iOS emojis. Android ones just don't cut it. Is there a keyboard that integrates both?

I've lost the "hangouts" sound on my device.

Posted: 01 Sep 2016 01:45 PM PDT

A little while ago in the middle of a texting conversation my notification noise stopped working and when I went to check the system sounds wasn't associated with it (a common issue I have, no big deal) but when I went to select my usual tone, the hangouts sound, it's no longer on the list.

Screen cap, ignore the colour

What can I do?

My galaxy s5 just got stuck in a boot loop, help please

Posted: 01 Sep 2016 11:32 AM PDT

I was just using my phone browsing reddit (imagine that) and the screen went black so I hit the home button to get it to wake up. When I did that the screen flashed lines and then restarted, now I can't get it into bootloader or recovery mode because it loads up and then just restarts again. Any suggestions?

EDIT: managed to get it into bootloader and factory reset, no dice... still in bootloop

Gmail app not showing badges - brand new Galaxy S7

Posted: 01 Sep 2016 09:35 AM PDT

I'm just making the switch from my iPhone 6 to the Galaxy S7, and mostly very pleased. I started moving to Android over a year ago when I replaced my iPad with a Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2", so I'm already sort of comfortable with Android.

I've been getting all of my apps (took ages!!), settings etc. sorted; and all seems OK, except that the Gmail app doesn't show badges for unread emails. I get the notifications, sounds etc.; and my other apps show them as expected - just no badge for Gmail.

As far as I can tell, settings seem fine - any suggestions what I can do to fix it?

How to add Google account without syncing anything?

Posted: 01 Sep 2016 10:50 AM PDT

Hello there guys.

I have one problem. I have a Google account where I have bought LOTS of apps. I want to add this account to my brother's phone, but there's one problem: after adding, all my mails, Hangouts chats, contacts and stuff will appear in my brother's phone too. I don't want that. I want my brother only be able to download apps/games using my Google account from Play Store.

Is there any way that I can add account without any sync options at all? I know that if I uncheck for example Gmail, emails wont be synced, but he can always tap on Gmail app and all my emails will be there. I'll be glad if anyone can help me

Google photos "free up space" feature

This feature deletes photos exclusively from my device and not from the cloud, right?

Retrieving contacts/data from broken phone

Posted: 01 Sep 2016 10:33 AM PDT

My phone is a One Plus One and it recently got damaged so that the screen is now blank. However, the touch capabilities are still intact - enough that I can unlock my phone by muscle memory. My USB debugging isnt activated and I cant see what I'm doing in order to get it. I already got a new phone so my old one doesnt have service anymore. Are there any options I could take in order to access my contacts and backup my phone on my computer?

How to add payment method to play store for Google managed domain?

Posted: 01 Sep 2016 12:41 PM PDT

My wife has been using [name]@[herdomain.com] through Gmail for years. She just got her first Android phone a week ago, switching from iPhone, so that is the account she used to set up her phone with.

I can't add Paypal as a payment option for her though and I also can't set up Google Rewards on her phone. Both just tell me that the service is unavailable at the moment but I have tried multiple times multiple days and always get the same error. I am assuming this is due to the account not actually being a Gmail account, just being managed through Google. But I don't actually know and wasn't the one to set it up (she has been using this account for maybe a decade) so I don't know how to dig into it.

Is this likely the problem? And if so, how can we fix it?

About to travel the world, need advice for getting the most out of my HTC One

Posted: 01 Sep 2016 12:11 PM PDT

Hi all, a preemptive thanks for reading- I am about to leave on a year long trip throughout Asia and Europe. I am cancelling all phone service I have with Verizon as I am out of contract and their service suspension is a joke (3 months max, and you still have to pay $10 a month). I'm planning on porting my number over to Google Voice, but once service is gone I'm not sure of my next move yet.

Background: Device is an HTC One M8, purchased almost right when it came out 2.5 years ago. Great device out of the box, but since has become rather sluggish (expected). I'm not proclaiming to be an Android power user, but I'm not a tech moron either- I've tried to keep it decently clean over the years.

I have three options as I see it:

1) Leave it as is- clean up some of the junk apps and other things, but otherwise don't do anything else to it. Deal with the poor performance and (IMO) increasingly bad UI, but have assurance that things generally will continue to work as they currently do.

2) Wipe and factory reset, and disable all updates. Brings me back to the day I purchased it, but concerned that apps will want the latest version of Android.

3) Wipe and root and go the full homebrew route with something like CyanogenMod, etc... No guarantee the apps I want will work at all.

My priorities for this trip are:

  • Google Translate (offline)
  • Google Maps (offline)
  • Battery life
  • Performance

I guess my biggest question is- will Translate and Maps run on older versions of Android and/or on rooted phones, or do I need to suck it up and keep current despite the cruft that's accumulated over the years?

Thanks again all, and please set me straight if any of my assumptions or ideas are flat out wrong- this is my first smartphone :P

Trouble with file transfers from Linux to Android via wifi

Posted: 01 Sep 2016 11:17 AM PDT

So, I got a Nexus 5X with Android 6.01 a while ago. I was trying to transfer files to my phone from my Linux PC and this is where I got confused.

First things first: Using a USB cable and MTP works flawlessly, but I didn't want to use a cable every time. So I tried two methods of transferring the files via wifi, but both left me with weird results:

SSHelper

Being a *nix guy, I installed SSHelper on my phone. I have some use cases for it, but recently, I tried to copy a file from my computer to the phone via SFTP. My SFTP client first transfers the file into a ".part" file on the remote device, then renames it after finishing. However, Android refuses to rename the file, tells the client that it doesn't have the permissions. So the file ends up on the device, but with the wrong name, which is not exactly useful. I can even manually delete the file via SFTP afterwards, but I cannot rename it.

KDE connect

Everybody praises KDE connect for being the most useful Android app ever for Linux Desktop users. Sadly, my experience differs.

When I open my device in KDE connect, I can transfer files to it without any problems. Then things start getting weird and confusing:

1) The files don't show up in most apps. For example, when I open the Google photo app, picture transfered via KDE connect don't appear there. However, I can see all the files in Total Commander. After I use Total Commander to rename the files or the folder I put them in, I can see them in the photo app.

2) Things got weirder when I tried to send one of the files from the photo app via bluetooth. It was a .jpg file. However, the receiving device didn't get the mypicture.jpg file, but the file name was a random number without a file extension (like 878974238979). When I used Total Commander to send the file via bluetooth, the file name was correct.

I was annoyed and confused by all this, so I deleted the files from my phone and copied the exact same files again via USB(MTP) and all the problems went away.

There seems to be some magic involved about saving a file to the Android file system that neither I, not KDE connect seem to get. If anyone has an explanation or even a solution for all this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Posted: 01 Sep 2016 10:59 AM PDT

So lately I've been running into some performance/battery issues with my MXPE and I've been out of the Android news loop for a while. Is the 6P still worth buying/the best off-contract option? They're fairly cheap on Swappa.

Headphone Button increasing/lowering volume instead of pausing

Posted: 01 Sep 2016 02:17 PM PDT

When I use any headphones with a button instead of pausing/playing the music it lowers or increases the volume

The problem occurred 30 minutes into a jog, it was in a hot climate. At the time I was using the "Pocket Skip Track" app in order to skip songs while jogging. I later uninstalled the app but the problem remained

Android Version: 6.0.1 Phone: Samsung Galaxy s6 (standard not edge)

I've tried restarting the phone, un installing and re installing "pocket skip track" as well as installing other similar apps. Currently all such apps have been un installed

Note 7 acts odd, rebooted, now locked out of Note 7 desipite knowing pattern

Posted: 01 Sep 2016 12:47 AM PDT

Hi, tonight my Note 7 started acting odd (locking up, etc), so after 5 minutes of fighting with it I got it to turn off, hoping that a clean boot would fix the issue.

Instead, when the phone books I have a black screen that says "To start up your device, draw your pattern." and a pattern entry area.

I know my pattern exactly, but after I enter it I get a "verifying" message followed by an incorrect pattern error message. I entered a few times, same error each time. I tried rebooting and re-entering my pattern, still an error. Now it is threatening to factory reset my device, but I have not idea what pattern it's looking for!

I don't think I have USB debugging enabled. I tried clearing the cache from recovery, no effect. I tried looking the phone up on Android Device Manager but it says it's been offline for a couple days (not true, very odd)

T-Mobile Note 7 (black)

Anyone have an idea on how to unlock the phone? I'd REALLY rather not have to reset the phone and reinstall and set back up everything
