Questions Thread - May 18, 2016

Posted: 18 May 2016 05:07 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we suggest checking the sidebar, the wiki, or Stack Overflow before posting). Examples of questions:

  • How do I pass data between my Activities?
  • Does anyone have a link to the source for the AOSP messaging app?
  • Is it possible to programmatically change the color of the status bar without targeting API 21?

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Large code snippets don't read well on reddit and take up a lot of space, so please don't paste them in your comments. Consider linking Gists instead.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/androiddev mods? We welcome your mod mail!

How will permissions work with Instant Apps?

Posted: 18 May 2016 05:14 PM PDT

Curious as to how permissions will work with Instant Apps? Will users be prompted to accept permissions each time they want to access through an Instant App through a link?

What apps should I develop to learn the basics?

Posted: 18 May 2016 06:57 PM PDT

Most of my Android development experience so far has been limited to games using LibGdx, but I want to learn more about using the native Android tools to create non-game apps. What are some simple generic apps you might recommend to somebody new to Android to learn some of the ropes?

Note: I'm not new to programming, just Android.

Thank you!

Is there a website for freelancing instead of just jobs?

Posted: 18 May 2016 12:44 PM PDT

I've been building apps for a few clients in the past months and like what I'm doing, some have recommended me to other people but I'd like to take in more. I see jobs posted all over for developers to join teams but I am not looking for a team, I am looking for clients who are looking for preferably smaller work. Is there a website/forum dedicated to this? I can check local classifieds and other means but I have never found anything in there.

What is the best way perform end to end testing with an Android device and hardware?

Posted: 18 May 2016 12:52 PM PDT

I am trying to perform end to end testing on my app. My goal is test Android code against C++ code on my hardware. Would the best way to do this be to leverage the Android NDK, or is there another approach I should take?

Links and tips appreciated, I'm not sure what to search for this

Do most of you guys use fragments or just straight activities?

Posted: 18 May 2016 11:08 AM PDT

Going through the Big Nerd Ranch android book and Fairly soon they start using fragments instead of just straight activities. It adds a layer of complexity to everything.

Just wondering if most you do the same because tutorials I did before on youtube and in a class I took never bothered with them and it was a new concept to me.
