It seems the Xperia X Performance can't record 4K video. Posted: 31 May 2016 12:33 PM PDT Seriously, why? If not to keep this feature for another future "real flagship" for even more than 699$..? I seriously hope that it's just a mistake. Missing features in Google's Android apps versus iOS? Posted: 31 May 2016 10:15 AM PDT I was reading the thread about the upcoming Maps update and saw some complaints that in Maps on iOS, users can save their preference for avoiding toll roads, but this feature is strangely absent from the Android version. I also recall Hangouts getting voice calling way ahead of Android. Just wondering if there are any more examples like this in other Google apps? [link] [comments]

I made Monochrome to make your display B/W to reduce power usage Posted: 31 May 2016 06:32 AM PDT Hi all, So three weeks back, I launched ForceDoze and I've received loads of comments from people telling me how the battery life on their devices increased, and I've been looking into other ways to improve battery life, especially when your battery is already low. So few days back, I came up with an idea and I made it into an app. It's called Monochrome and it makes your display black & white to further reduce battery drain when your device battery is low. How does it work?Monochrome is triggered when your device's battery level hits the LOW level as defined by the OEM (usually 15%) and Monochrome is triggered again when your battery level hits the OKAY level (usually 30%) as defined by the OEM. When your battery level reaches the LOW state, Monochrome is turned on and when your battery level reaches the OKAY state, Monochrome is turned off. This is all done automatically so you don't have to manage anything. How is it different from other apps?Monochrome works on the GPU level, so Monochrome does not implement some kind of hidden/invisible view on top of apps to enforce black and white colors. This means Monochrome does not run in the background and/or constantly monitor your battery level, it's only activated when your battery reaches LOW or OKAY states. Why can't I define my own battery percentage levels? This is because if the user was allowed to define the battery percentage values themselves, then the app will have to constantly run in the background and monitor changes to battery level, which will have a negative effect on battery life. Monochrome takes advantage of two system broadcasts: android.intent.action.BATTERY_LOW and android.intent.action.BATTERY_OKAY which are sent when the battery level hits the LOW and OKAY states respectively. By taking advantage of these broadcasts, Monochrome is only triggered twice, instead of constantly monitoring changes in background and activating/deactivating when the battery level hits an user specified amount. This prevents Monochrome from having a negative effect on the overall device battery life. How effective is it?It's effective, but not by a huge margin. When your battery is low, Android puts several restrictions on the device performance and other things to reduce battery consumption. This helps in slowing down battery depletion. Making the display monochrome further reduces the rate of battery depletion, but not by a huge amount. You can save a few percents, especially on devices with an AMOLED panel, like Galaxy S6/S7/etc and Moto X. On devices with LCD panels, you may not see a noticeable difference.
Monochrome requires ROOT. If you are NOT ROOTED then you need to manually grant WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS permission to the app by executing the following ADB command:
Monochrome is a free and open source application. You can download it from: Play Store : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.suyashsrijan.lowbatterymonochrome [link] [comments]
