This Week in News

  • Samsung Considering LG Batteries In S8: Whether it's a PR move or genuinely under consideration any more than it had been previously, Samsung is reportedly looking at the possibility of using LG-manufactured batteries in its upcoming flagship devices. This came following reports of the remaining Note 7's in the US getting terminated through OTA updates to prevent further malfunctions. Read more here.

  • Android Wear 2.0 Dev Preview 4: New in Dev Preview 4 of the upcoming v2.0 of Android Wear is, among other things, seamless authentication (such as one-click Google sign-in via OAuth), in-app billing and purchases on the watch via a PIN, and swipe-to-dismiss is making a comeback. Rejoice in your easy yuletide dismissals! Uh - if you've got the preview downloaded, of course. Read more here.

  • Galaxy S8 To Come With Rear-mounted Fingerprint Sensor: First it was integrated into the display, then it was to be under the glass bezel, now the latest tidbit of information says the fingerprint sensor for the Galaxy S8 will be on the back. Considering this shotgun approach to calling it, it would be hilarious if it was mounted on the side. Highly unlikely considering the "edge", but it would still be funny. Read more here.

This Week in Apps

  • Mega Man NES Series Coming to Android: Capcom announced this week it would be bringing the entire collection of NES Mega Man (more specifically, 1 through 6) games to Android. The Japanese launch is slated for January 6, but details on when it will see worldwide release are not yet available. As for how well it'll work with touch controls… that remains to be seen. Read more here.

  • Nova Launcher 5.0: The 5.0 update brings over a few new features, most of which are inspired by Android Nougat features. There's now a Pixel-style search bar, an update search view with tabs for new, recent and frequent apps, double-swipe gesture shortcuts, 7.1-style home screen shortcuts, and more. It's also on sale currently for $0.99, if you for some reason don't already own it. Read more here.

  • Evernote Controversy: To start with, let me add that the Evernote team has since done a full 180 and reversed the decision. The controversy started when a change to the privacy policy was announced, whereby "some Evernote employees" would be allowed to view the content of users accounts to improve its machine learning tools. Not to worry though, the list of people allowed this kind of access was to be kept "small". The fact that you could opt out of machine learning for a "personalized experience" but not from employees accessing your data "for other reasons" didn't exactly help either. Evernote did, however, later backtrack and decided to not implement the policy change after all. You can read the initial story here.

Google, please kill the horrible ongoing casting notification for all devices on the network

TIL In Android Chrome if you try to Swipe up the Last Tab for 5 times, it spins with an Animation.

Posted: 20 Dec 2016 09:10 AM PST

Probably an Easter Egg perhaps, not much useful TBH, but still fun. 😃

Edit: This happens in Tab Manager/Tab Screen in Chrome, also if you have only one Tab open, that one Spins.

PSA - If "AquaMail" shows up on your home screen, it was put there by OfficeSuite or another MobiSystems app.

Posted: 20 Dec 2016 11:36 AM PST

Noticed this today for the first time. Uninstalling OfficeSuite will remove it and chances of it happening in the future.

Poor form by devs. Quickest way to get me to uninstall an app I use a handful of times a year is force your crap in a user's face.

Ulefone Metal XDA Review: An Often-Hilarious Trainwreck of a Phone, But a Step Forward For Ulefone's Developer Relations

PSA - Pixel owners not willing to wait for Google to correct the audio distortion issue, there is a fix!

Posted: 20 Dec 2016 01:11 PM PST

After reading /u/scloutkst2889 post about the lack of these issues on a particular custom ROM (WETA) that allows the user to select Viper4Android in place of the stock audio driver during installation (Aroma). I decided to give it a go on one of my replacements and well, no more distortion! I've tested across various apps side by side with my original Pixel XL and no matter what, the distortion has disappeared!

So if you are willing and familiar with these procedures, here is a fix you can use until Google decides if and when they will correct it. Follow the XDA thread for your particular model.

Video Comparison (Stock vs. WETA): YouTube

WETA XDA Thread for Pixel: Pixel

WETA XDA Thread for Pixel XL: Pixel XL

As a longtime Nexus owner, I understood that they were billed as "Developer Devices" so unlocking the bootloader and flashing a custom ROM was almost expected. Google killed the Nexus for the Pixel, a true "Flagship". I'm of the opinion that Google's QC failed in more than one area, there should be no reason I would be forced to have to go through this process just to use the device as expected (i.e. VR DayDream headset).

Being that this is looking more and more like a software issue, I am still left wondering about the following: Why does this issue only affect a certain number of devices and not all?

Video demonstrating stock Pixel XL without audio distortion: YouTube

Please note, this is process requires OEM Unlocking your devices (full wipe), installing TWRP, and installing the ROM into the correct boot slot, I would only recommend that users with experience flashing custom ROMs try this procedure.

Edit 1: I meant to say "workaround" not "fix" in the title.

Edit 2: Thank you /u/Ramacher - User discovered that you do not need to flash the entire ROM, just the WETA Audio MOD found here - Still requires unlocked bootloader and TWRP install!

The Android Pay Christmas promotion is pretty neat (UK)

Posted: 20 Dec 2016 03:57 PM PST

So just before heading to the gym I was pretty hungry so I grabbed a Mayo Chicken (judge all you like) from McDonalds, but realised I left my wallet in the car, so decided to just pay with my phone.

After getting about 20 "just confetti this time" responses I had basically no hope for winning anything, but opened my cracker and found this beauty.

My 99p dirty bulk just sorted my tech out for the entire year. I made a horrific scene in McDonalds too, everyone looked at me like some weirdo jumping at my phone.

So basically, keep trying, no matter how small the purchase, could get a nice surprise. Also, if someone from Google in the UK is reading this, thank you 💜

gping.io server software open sourced

Posted: 20 Dec 2016 02:22 PM PST

Hi everybody, happy December!

Major announcement about the gping.io Android app[0].

Tl;dr:

  1. We have a project roadmap

  2. The server is open source

  3. You can be a contributor

WHAT IS GPING.IO? This Android application provides realtime tracking of your cars location, engine diagnostic codes, OBD integration, and more. It provides a TinyURL like URL for your car on gping.io.

2016 is wrapping up and the GPing[1] team has a couple major announcements to close out the year.

We've brought a second engineer on board to help. Our first task was to figure out what kind of project GPing was going to be and how to get there. We established a roadmap of new features and the top three are:

  • Account authentication, provisioning, and settings support;

  • A documented API allowing data access;

  • User defined actions that can be triggered by various location related events.

The second task we undertook was to clean up the existing codebase (a little) and get it ready for you to deploy your own instance. That means…

We're happy to announce that the GPing server code is being released on GitHub[2]. It's set up to make deploying your own instance as trivial as possible whether the environment is a LAMP box in the living room or AWS ECS. There are a few early adopter codes[3] (unlocks the Android app until at least 2018) for the Android app available free if you'd like to take a custom server for a spin.

Even with additional eng support GPing is just two people, with primarily back end experience, working in their spare time. If you'd like to get involved we have (or will soon) particular need for:

  • UX/Design for Android and web;

  • Front end web developers;

  • iOS devs;

  • Folks with authentication/oauth experience;

  • Marketing and copy editing support!

Your contributions are appreciated and you can find out how to get involved by responding here, dropping into IRC (#gping.io on Freenode), or checking our listed issues[4].

Happy Holidays,

<3 GPing Team
