I mean, it's time! It's 2016, we have devices that now records 4K resolution and yet nothing from Google to let you edit and upload onto YouTube and such.

While on Apple's side, they have iMovie as a bundle whenever you purchase a iDevice. Which reality terms, it's embarrassing that you still have to go through third-party and not a Google-made app.

Discovered this in the Google play music app, I thought I would share

I found this by mistake. When playing music and navigating the app you have the small banner along the bottom of the track that is currently playing. The only button the banner is a Play/Pause icon but you can actually swipe left/right to move to the next/previous track. Nothing major but for a long time I've been clicking the banner to get to the full set of controls to skip tracks.

What ever happened to google keyboards split thumb mode? I believe it was a part of the Marshmallow preview builds and then disappeared.

That's the only thing missing from the current google keyboard for me. It's so helpful in landscape and especially in tablets.

Benefits:

  • All your devices will ring at once. If someone calls your phone number, all your Android phones, Android tablets, landlines, PCs, Macs, iPhones, iPads, and Chromebooks will ring at once. This allows you to answer phone calls from virtually any device.
  • You will also be able to text from any device using Hangouts. You'll never need to use MightySMS, Pushbullet, Join, or any of those apps ever again.
  • You'll finally have a unified messaging setup that's significantly better than iMessage in every way.
  • If your phone plan has limited minutes, you can use Hangouts to make unlimited VOIP calls using data or WiFi. This works very well on the $30 5GB T-Mobile plan. It also comes in handy in places where you have WiFi, but no cellular signal.
  • Free calling to the US/Canada from anywhere internationally as long as you have data or wifi. This isn't an official feature, but I know for a fact that it works.

Problems

  • You must use Hangouts exclusively on all your devices. Any third party texting apps will not work with Google Voice.
  • There's a slight learning curve. The voice.google.com interface is not very user friendly so it takes a while to figure out the nuances.
  • Only available in the United States
  • Not available if you use Project Fi.

Scenario #1: You currently have a number from your carrier and you want to port to Google Voice.

  1. Pay the $20 fee to port your carrier number to Google Voice. This will ensure that you don't have to give people a new phone number.
  2. Get a new number from your carrier. Go to voice.google.com and add this new number as a forwarding number.
  3. Enable the setting to receive text messages in Hangouts. This will allow you to text people from any device you use.
  4. Ensure that "Google Talk" is set up as a forwarding device. This ensures proper compatibility with all your devices.
  5. Contact your carrier and disable voicemail on your device phone number. This ensures that your device voicemail does not pick up the call instead of Google Voice Voicemail.

Scenario #2: You want a new Google Voice number.

  1. Go to voice.google.com to get a new free phone number.
  2. Go to voice.google.com and add your carrier number as a forwarding number.
  3. Enable the setting to receive text messages in Hangouts. This will allow you to text people from any device you use.
  4. Ensure that "Google Talk" is set up as a forwarding device. This ensures proper compatibility with all your devices.
  5. Contact your carrier and disable voicemail on your device phone number. This ensures that your device voicemail does not pick up the call instead of Google Voice Voicemail.

Note: You have to decide between receiving calls through Hangouts over VOIP or having calls forwarded to you using the Hangouts app. If you want your calls forwarded regularly, add your secondary carrier number as a forwarding phone and check the box to enable it at voice.google.com. If you want your calls forwarded through the Hangouts app, enable incoming calls in the app settings and ensure that "Google Talk" is set up as a forwarding device.

[Suggestion] Hey Google Photos, Please Let Me Make Panoramas From Existing Photos!

I like that Google Photos lets me make things (animations, collages) out of photos I've taken. But I often take large landscapes, and though the technology has been around forever, I am for some reason unable to join these existing pictures, even manually, into a panorama. I would really like to see this added.

Do you have a burner/backup phone that you use instead of your daily driver when you're going somewhere/doing something adventurous?

My daily driver is an LG G5. I have it in a case and screen protector, but that can only defend against shock and scratching. Sometimes I do telecom work in attics where its dangerously hot for a smartphone. Or I'm out on the water fishing and don't want to worry about corrosive salt water or air.

My backup device is an LG G Stylo that I for from eBay for $50. Also bought two spare batteries for camping trips and the like.

So, do you swap over to a backup device when you're going somewhere your "main" phone could get damaged?
